This comprehensive course, focused on the renowned Frank Reilly drawing method, consists of fifteen lectures that delve into the details and applications of this technique. By employing this method, students will be able to effectively complete a figure drawing from life in under 45 minutes. The course begins with the fundamentals of action lines and abstract shapes, and gradually progresses to smaller shapes, negative space, value, perspective, foreshortening, edge, and line, before addressing intricate details, such as the face, hands, feet, and drapery on the figure. Students will also be provided with five full demonstrations, each taking between 4-7 minutes, showcasing figures in various positions drawn from life. The primary focus of this technique is to ensure that "the whole is more important than the parts," which is emphasized by beginning with a gesture drawing and elaborating on its structure through to completion.
Throughout the course, students will be given step-by-step instruction on utilizing and mastering the Reilly drawing technique. This will be supplemented with demonstrations that illustrate the method's applications in real scenarios, allowing the learner to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the process. Additionally, the course will cover the essentials of drapery application on figures, maintaining consistency with the core principles of the Reilly technique. The combination of in-depth explanations, practical demonstrations, and a focus on the Reilly drawing method's foundations will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to create impressive figure drawings from life.
User review:
Don does a good job of hitting the high points of drawing in general and despite the video quality, which he explains in the comments section, there's much useful information here. I came across this course looking for more information on the Reilly method which I became aware of in books and other videos. Don clearly uses the Reilly method (or a variation) but I was looking for a more in depth explanation of the rhythms in the form and how to use them... sort of an entire class on the method itself. (To be honest, I still have 6 videos to watch, so I may get a surprise or perhaps I just missed it.) I would like to see him teach a series on painting. That's something I want to do but have no clue how to start. UPDATE* Don does have other paid classes I may explore later on these very topics.
5 stars to keep this in search, 4 stars for value (to me personally).
For the price, the value is great. And you have to love the Kentucky shirt in his self-portrait. Go Cats! [1]... Read More

User review:
Starting with how to select materials, then how to use them properly, to drawing basic shapes, how to "see" these basic shapes in any object, to finally putting all the concepts together to produce a drawing of a bird is an amazing process that proves Mr. Eviston's idea that anyone can learn to draw. While I am not a beginner, I enjoyed reviewing each lesson to remind myself of basics I have forgotten. His lesson on how to draw curves was not only my favorite, but it provided a process I have never seen before so that now my curves are more closely what I am seeing by using his method. The addition of the full demonstrations of the bird, the three flowers, and the human figure are the perfect ways to see all of the techniques and strategies put to work on paper and done in such a way as to see how they are being used! There is nothing missing in this course because it also has LOTS of practice sets to be done for those serious about learning how to or how to improve their drawing. [2]... Read More

User review:
I went into this course with absolutely 0 experience in Procreate - Along the way, I would pause my courses to expand upon what I learned. As an example, when we were learning how to use the isometric, perspective, and other drawing guides, I decided to create my own Isometric office illustration and it came out fantastic. Earlier in the lecture I also created two iterations of the plant drawing. One was a traced version of the plant-reference.jpg for practice, and for the second round I did a digital painting of the plant with the skills I learned. With all that said, I give Brad an immense shout out for making each lecture easy to understand, and for inspiring creativity and growth throughout the process. I also loved experimenting with the different styles he taught us, and learning more about myself as an artist while doing so. Additionally, I NEVER felt lost, and never had to google how to accomplish anything because the lessons were very clear. I can't wait to try more of his lectures, and I'm so grateful to have learned so much from this one!! Thank you!! [3]... Read More

User review:
This was my first course on Udemy so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been practicing drawing for a few months and wanted to try something a bit structured. The course introduced a few concepts for drawing portraits I've seen elsewhere so didn't mind the changing of styles shown - in fact it was fun to try each of the styles.
The last section on portrait drawing was a bit too long, especially as I'm a pencil drawer so wasn't able to add highlights all the time but I tried my best and pleased with my attempt - I couldn't have tried it without the encouragement.
I found the tutor to be engaging and I'm going to try another one of his courses as it became clear my shading skills needs brushing up (excuse the pun).
My best parts of the course - when the tutor said that you have to switch off that part of the brain that sees facial structures and look for shapes and guides. The other good part was section 5 part 1 - some very good tips on how to draw from a photo. [4]... Read More

User review:
I started late with drawing. I never was an "artist". For more than 40 years of my life I thought drawing is purely talent. When I was still a student, my teachers and classmates thought my drawing resembles chicken scratch. I never had any of my drawings praised or looked at with interest. It was a joke to make people laugh. After more than 40 years of being discouraged, I found Mr. Matt at youtube and got encouraged to try his course. Of course my family tried to discourage me and say I lack the talent and skill and it is a pure waste of money. I am glad I did not listened this time. The best thing I learned is that drawing is not purely talent. It can be developed by perseverance and proper training. I made a portrait of my wife and son after taking this lesson, Now people thought I am a natural artist, gifted with talent and so on. I am still struggling hard and keep getting frustrated but at least I now have the confidence to keep on. Thanks. [5]... Read More

User review:
This is one of several courses I have taken with Brent, and it is not the least bit disappointing. Others have complained that his voice makes them sleepy. I find his voice to be soothing, reasuring, and always encouraging. Still others have complained about the course having models to practice from which makes no sense to me. Learing to do the human figure means students must have models to work from! What I like the best about the practice reels is that I can start and stop them as I need to along the way, to revisit poses that were particularly challenging, and to work on those that I found that I like to draw. Everything a student needs to start gesture drawing is included in the course with a genuine bonus included at the end: several additional ways to gesture draw! I have a couple more courses from Brent that are waiting for my attention, and I cannot wait to start. Thanks, Brent, for clear, concise instructions with hands on drawing for us to follow, too! Oh, before I forget, yes, my gesture drawings have improved greatly due to working with this course. [6]... Read More

Ben Colefax shows a brief introduction of parts listed in the index that will help the student create "cute" cartoons. As he draws/demonstrates (while using Photoshop, Illustrator or Sketchbook Pro) the student (child to adult) may draw along with him. He demonstrates the core basis for which to draw other cartoons on with this very simple, but modern style. I wish he had links to more of his creations and more animals or monsters. So charmingly cute. Cartoon books from Amazon might have more examples, and as I have bought some of those books this short lecture series, for me, is more delightful and utilizes more of my senses and thus makes it easier to retain and understand. (And since I drew along with him I now have proof for myself that I can draw in this style!!) He is not too chatty and has a pleasant presentation style, and when he fast motions it he has fun background music. Thank you. [7]... Read More

User review:
This was a well presented and thorough course and it was particularly useful on drawing the facial features. I found the first two sections (on the facial anatomy) a little bit difficult and personally would have benefitted if the explanations had been a little bit slower. Also the original pencil lines which were used (as a guide) were a bit too light for me to see without straining my eyes. I know they were MEANT to be light (because they are just there to guide and would be erased later) but it would have made the lesson easier for me if it was just STATED that they were meant to be light but had actually been darker in order to make them clear. However, the later lessons, on the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, hair and shading were excellent and I learnt a lot from them. Thank you. [10]... Read More

Prior to purchasing this course I thought that there were not enough lessons in comparison to others offered here on Udemy to be worth my money, but I was surprisingly wrong. This course was perfect for my needs. The instructor has a NO FLUFF approach to teaching. Each module is structured with a lecture, demonstration, followed by application.
I spent a great deal of time utilizing each lesson meticulously. The mystery is now gone in Light and Shadow for simple objects. I would recommend getting a hold of some 3d objects such as a ping pong ball (or any solid color ball) and a small light source (such as a book reading light). I used my daughter's building blocks as a cube, a ping pong ball as an orb, and a cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll for a cylinder. These helped me study many angles.
I look forward to enrolling in his next course on how to do highlights and shadows for more complex figures and shapes. [12]... Read More

I have been taking Brent Evanston's drawing courses in order from the beginning, and he is a very effective communicator of the drawing process.
He has figured out how to break down the learning steps into very approachable parts, and - through his years of teaching many students - knows what works well.
The more I watch this series, the more I am impressed by his preparation. He doesn't just randomly talk and say what pops into his mind. Rather, he has thought through "the best" things to communicate at any part of the course and this is what he says.
I've actually noticed ever so slight jumps (splices) in the video between each of these gems that he is communicating - he must be pausing and collecting his thoughts of just what to say next between these takes. Really, Brent leaves nothing to chance regarding what he is getting across. Now that it's dawning on me just how much thought and preparation he is putting into this commentary and instruction, I am basically hanging on every word, and using this in my own practice that goes along with each lecture.
